South East Counties Womens Football League - Div 1[W]
Haywards Heath Town 2 (Cath Diffey, Mel Bramley) Whitehawk Reserves 3 - 1st May 2008
Off the pitch many players from both team socialize together , but on the pitch both sets of players were determined to be on the winning team and so this was never going to be a dull end of season match and the ensuing ninety minutes proved to be a very entertaining and competitive game under floodlights on Thursday 1st May . Heath were far sharper than the previous week and started to put pressure on the Whitehawk defence but it was Whitehawk who went ahead after 30 mins with a well struck volley from outside the area , and within 3 minutes Heath found themselves undeservedly 2 goals down with nothing to show for their efforts. Showing great spirit however just 5 mins later Cath Diffey received a ball on the left from Mel Bramley , cut inside and hit an unstoppable shot into the net. Caz Walters came close, forcing a corner , whilst at the other end Heaths keeper Celia Huggett came out well to deny Whitehawk .
Heath came out for the second half determined to get an equaliser and after efforts by Jo Ashworth and Walters it came after 10 minutes when Mel Bramley swept the ball home from close range . Heath now went looking for the winner with Ashworth going close but left themselves exposed and Whitehawk scored their third just 5 mins later. The game now resembled a Cup final with Heath responding to their very vocal supporters with determination and effort as Heath kept the pressure on the Whitehawk defence but just could not find an equaliser.
Heaths “player of the match” was keeper Celia Huggett who made some brave interceptions, but Manager Dave Gittins was proud of the efforts made by the whole of his squad, with Captain Julie Hawthorne leading by example in defence with some well timed headers and tackles , and they deserved something other than pride from the match .
Heath now go into the summer for a well earned break from 11 a side football although they have many small sided tournaments to look forward.
