Saunders Hat- trick in vain
Eastbourne Town 4 Haywards Heath Town 3 (Mica Saunders 3) - 7th Oct 2007
Heath played in an excellent game of football where defences on both sides were under constant pressure in a very open game. Heath were edged out by the odd goal despite a well taken hat-trick from Mica Saunders.
Heath took the lead in the first minute when a slick passing move started by Michelle Winnard was deftly flicked home by Saunders at the near post. Both teams continued to make opportunities, but it was Eastbourne who equalised when the striker just beat Heath's goalkeeper Rachel Virgo to a through ball.
The second half carried on in the same vein as the first but with Heath a lot tighter in midfield.
In an end to end battle Eastbourne went in front with a fine header from a cross but Heath equalised just 2 mins later , Saunders unleashing a great shot from a Mel Bramley pass .
Less than 10 mins elapsed before Eastbourne again took the lead following a corner but again Heath bounced back, equalizing less than 10 mins later Saunders again scoring , this time following a Bramley corner.
However it was Eastbourne who got the final goal with a fine shot from the edge of the area, just touching the underside of the bar way out of Virgos reach.
>BR> Heath fought hard but paid the penalty for losing two goals at corners. Jo Ashworth earned Heath's player of the match for her non stop running and commitment, but special mention must go to Cath Diffey for an excellent display in midfield and Saunders for a superb hat-trick.
Team: Rachel Virgo; Debbie Johnson; Penny Gittins; Julie Hawthorne(Capt); Eve Todhunter; Michelle Winnard (Fran Pritlove 65 mins); Caz Walters (Karen Bridgewater 80 mins ); Cath Diffey; Mica Saunders; Jo Ashworth; Mel Bramley.
