HEATH ‘s INJURY TIME GOAL ENABLES VICTORY IN EXTRA TIME
Aylesbury Vale LFC 2 Haywards Heath Town LFC 3 (AET) [Jenny Greenfield , Leigh Farley 2] - 11th Sept 2005
Heath made the 190 mile round trip to Aylesbury for their FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round match well worth while, coming back from 2 -0 down to force a well deserved win in extra time.
Heath had already twice come close before on ten minutes an Aylesbury free kick dropped in the box, and their striker forced it home from close range. Heath continued to press, having a goal disallowed for offside, and in a four minute period Leigh Farley twice shot just wide, Jenny Greenfield’s header was cleared off the line, and Lou Stevens hit a post.
1-0 down at half time, it really didn’t look to be Heath’s day when Aylesbury doubled their lead four minutes into the second half, but Heath responded immediately, Greenfield reacting first to a back pass, and pushing the ball past the keeper. Claire Imray saved well from a long range effort, but the balance of play remained with Heath. Twice Stevens had efforts cleared off the line, before Farley finally saw justice served, firing home a superb shot from 25 yards, 2 minutes into injury time.
The first period of extra time saw neither side looking likely to score, but the deadlock was broken four minutes into the second period. Imray made a good save and from her clearance Greenfield pushed the ball through to Farley who beat the keeper to score the winner. Special mention must go to Player of the Match, Jenny Greenfield and to Claire Imray in the Heath goal, who made some outstanding saves, especially at the feet of some very 'aggressive' strikers.
Although not the most skilful performance shown by Heath, the effort shown to support each other in difficult circumstances shone through as always in a very physical game not helped by the poor standard of refereeing.
Heath are now away to Slough in the next round on Sept 25th
