South East Counties Women’s Football League – Div1[W]
Haywards Heath Town 1(Mel Broome) Eastbourne Town 0 - 12th Nov 2006
Mel Broome scores on her Debut
Heath continued their run of good form with a well taken victory against a tough Eastbourne Town team. Heath for once came out of the blocks quickly and surprised Town with early pressure and a fine shot from distance from George Thomas. The half continued and Eastbourne started to gain momentum but Heath's defence of Michelle Winnard, Debbie Johnson, Julie Hawthorne and Eve Todhunter held firm although Eastbourne were nearly allowed to score with a momentary lapse in concentration .
The second half began in the same way as the first and Fran Pritlove was unlucky not to score following a corner, her header hitting the post before being scrambled away. A dour midfield struggle ensued with Heath trying to get their passing game together. The midfield of “player of the match” Thomas, Lou Creasey, Cath Diffey and Karen Bridgewater were outstanding but chances at both ends were at a premium.
Captain Penny Gittins was introduced with about 30 mins remaining for the injured Michelle Winnard after spending nine weeks out with injury.
With 15 mins remaining Heath introduced new signing, Mel Broome to the game and just as the match seemed to be heading for a draw, she showed her experience by pouncing on a well judged through ball by Mica Saunders and fired home the winner with less than 3 minutes remaining.
Whilst not performing quite so well as the previous week Heath's players continue to show the effort, commitment, and never say die attitude that will ensure some good results in the future.
