HEATH GRAB CRUCIAL 3 Pts IN INJURY TIME

Upper Beeding 0 Haywards Heath 1 (Leigh Farley)

Heath travelled to Upper Beeding in this vitally important relegation match against the bottom club. In a dour match played on a sticky pudding of a pitch, Heath tried to play the game that the conditions merited but found it difficult not to play their normal running, passing game. Consequently their game got bogged down in the mud. This didn't stop Heath making the odd chance with Mel Rooney producing some telling crosses. Mel Bramley netted superbly following a corner only for the goal to be ruled out for handball. Another chance followed when Del Cook was denied at the far post. At the other end Vicki Lank showed her class with an outstanding save but Heath finished the half well..
In the second half the game continued in the same vein with Sarah Woods coming on for only her 2nd appearance and impressing. Rooney had a chance following a well judge pass by Kim Donno but shot over. Chances at both ends were few and far between and keeper Lank dealt confidently with any threat. The game seemed to be heading for a stalemate, when in injury time a typical penetrating Leigh Farley run saw her brought down just outside the penalty area, and from the resultant free kick she shot just inside the post , with the keeper reaching the ball but unable to prevent a goal . Just 10 seconds after the restart the final whistle blew !!. Although this was not as skillful a performance as Heath had been producing in recent weeks, the never say die attitude of whole the team saw them through on this very difficult pitch.
For Heath the performances of debutant full backs, Emma Burkitt and Sarah Woods were outstanding as was the leadership of player of the match, Penny Gittins.
