South East Counties Womens Football League - League Cup

HEATH 1sts MAINTAIN 100% RECORD

Haywards Heath Town 3 (Caz Walters 2 Karen Bridgewater) Ashford 1- 23rd Sept 2007

Heath extended their excellent 100% record and continued their superb form against Ashford from Div 1 [East] in this league cup match. Heath nearly went ahead after just 2 mins when Jo Ashworth's shot cum cross hit the bar and continued to create chances especially from Caz Walters, Ashworth and Mica Saunders who started putting concerted pressure on the Ashford defence. The first goal came after 13 mins from Caz Walters with a left shot into the net – her 1st goal since rejoining Heath at the start of the season. Chances continued to come and go with Saunders, Ashworth and Walters all being consistently denied by some excellent shot stopping from the Ashford goalkeeper in a half dominated by Heath for long spells.
In the second half Ashford came more into the game, but the defence of Debbie Johnson, Julie Hawthorne, Eve Todhunter and player of the match Penny Gittins protected keeper Rachel Virgo from having to make any saves. Heath then got the second goal they needed when Karen Bridgewater forced the ball home from close range after good work by Saunders. Heath continued to show their battling qualities epitomised by the industrious Cath Diffey in midfield whilst Claire Imray, for many seasons a keeper, demonstrated her vastly improved performance as an outfield player when coming on for the 2nd half . With less than 15 mins remaining Caz Walters then netted a third with a powerful left foot shot after collecting the ball near the halfway line and playing a “one – two” with Saunders. Virgo was forced to make an excellent save towards the end, diverting the ball onto the post, but the ball fell conveniently to the Ashford forward who netted. Donna Onslow made her 1st appearance for the Club on her return after 10 seasons away from the game and showed she will be an asset to the Club. Again another workmanlike performance from Heath who meet Premier Div side Petts Wood from Kent in the next Rnd , next Sunday Heath have another Cup game when they travel to Eastbourne Borough for the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup.
