Sussex County FA Womens League – Div 1
Hailsham 5 Haywards Heath Town 2nds 1 (Rachel Virgo)- 5th Nov 2006
After last weeks disappointing game Heath were determined to make vast improvements, and that’s exactly what they showed during the first half. The defence of Gemma Paull (captain), Rebecca Smallman, Sam Coppard and Sasha Fry worked really well, and kept Hailshams quick strikers at bay for a fair while. A re-shuffle of the team saw Tasha Sole playing in midfield alongside Keveena Mosen, who worked extremely well together, and linked up well with Jo d’Ambra and Jo Stevenson on the wing to make chances for strikers Rachel Virgo and Julie Boyce. Virgo had a couple of chances saved, as did d’Ambra, Sole and Mosen. Hailsham eventually broke the deadlock with a good through ball and slotted in past keeper Celia Huggett. Before half time there were more chances at both ends, with good saves from both keepers.
A half time swap of Jo Fairbairn on for Coppard, but unfortunately Hailsham came out with all guns blazing and scored 2 quick goals. Heaths “Player of the Match” Virgo pulled a goal back with a well struck shot to make it 3-1 and Sole made some terrific runs through Hailshams midfield but by this time Virgo’s injury was getting worse so Heath struggled a bit up front. A free kick from Mosen created an attacking option, as well as good link up play involving d’Ambra, Sole and Boyce. Hailsham continued to attack in numbers and although Heath fought hard they could not stop 2 more goals going in the net.
Unfortunately the game came to a rather sour end, with captain Gemma Paull turning awkwardly and with manager Sarah Miller and club coach Keveena Mosen fearing the worst an ambulance was called. Luckily it was not as bad as thought with hopefully only ligament damage done. With only 9 minutes left to play, the Referee called the game to a close with the full agreement of Heath and the very reluctant agreement of Hailshams manager the game finished with the score standing at 5-1. All the girls played extremely well today, with the misfortune of injuries within the team.
