Sussex County FA Women's League - Div 1

Haywards Heath Town 2nds 1 (Marianne Bowtell) Hailsham 2 - 18th Mar 2007

Heath are really struggling with injuries and illness at present and with 2 regular 2nd team players drafted into the 1sts Heath 2nds were down to just 11 players, at least three of who should not really have played, but team spirit being what it is they made themselves available. Heath had the best possible start when with only 2 minutes gone after good work by Carly Vaughan , Marianne Bowtell seized upon a defensive error and scored from close range with just her 2nd touch of the ball, playing her 1st match since an injury way back last August . The lead was short lived however as Hailsham equalised within 8 mins and with just 15 mins gone Jo d’Ambra suffered a reoccurrence of her recent injury and Heath were down to 10 players. Heath worked hard against the slope and the strong wind with Heaths Player of the Match Gemma Paull very evident and at half time the score remained at 1-1 despite a good attempt by Keveena Mosen.
In the 2nd half keeper Huggett was soon in action making a save that drew applause from both team supporters but Heath were reduced to 9 players with 30 mins to go when Rachel Virgo’s recent injury re-occurred . Vaughan and Bowtell gave Heath hope without being apply the final touch and Hailsham eventually went ahead with a high lob giving Huggett no chance . In the end full credit must go to the 9 who battled on valiantly despite , in many cases, carrying injuries which prevented them playing to their full potential , giving Manager Sarah Miller pride in the excellent team spirit .

Team: Celia Huggett, Gemma Paull (captain), Bex Smallman, Jo d’Ambra , Keveena Mosen, Julie Boyce, Michelle Schofield, Jo Stevenson, Carly Vaughan, Rachel Virgo, Marianne Bowtell .
