Sussex County FA Womens Challenge Trophy – ¼ Final

Seahaven Harriers 3 Haywards Heath Town 2nds 0 - 18th Nov 2007

The forecast heavy rain started just minutes before kick-off and was accompanied by a biting, cold wind coming in from the sea. Just five minutes in to the first half Seahaven scored after a one-on-one stand-off between their striker and Alison Field in goal. Seahaven continued the first half in an attacking spirit. Heath’s defence of Dawn Gaston, Bex Smallman, Gemma Paull and Julie Boyce withstood each wave admirably, working very well as a unit. The five-man midfield supported the defence well, with Mel Conniff the sole striker.

Heath finished the first half only 1-0 down and were unfortunate to go 2-0 shortly into the second half after a slick Seahaven attack split the defence very effectively. Jo D’ambra replaced Keveena Mosen in midfield on 55 minutes and Sarah Bridge came on for Jo Stevenson after 60 minutes, with D’ambra switching to the right wing. As the poor light faded, the team battled on in appalling conditions of cold, wind and rain/sleet/hail, which made it difficult even to see the ball. Yet another Seahaven attack produced a late third goal after Field parried two successive shots on one side of her penalty area followed by a third on the other side - but was unable to stop the rebound, which was thumped into the roof of the net.

All in all this was a much better performance than the last time the team played Seahaven at the end of October.
