Sussex County Women & Girls Football League - Supplementary Trophy Final - 1st leg
Sub Jo Ashworth hattrick secures victory in 1st leg
Haywards Heath 2nds 3 [Jo Ashworth 3 ] Langton Green 1 - 20th April 2008
Heath went into this match with fighting spirit, and determination to get something for their long fought season.
With an injury worry to Kim Donno during the warm up, regular 1st teamer Jo Ashworth kindly stepped in to be a sub.
Heath started well, and created some good chances early on, with Caz Walters linking well with Donna Onslow, Nat Trend and Keveena Mosen. Heath were beginning to run Langton Green’s midfield in circles, but unfortunately from a quick break Langton went 1-0 up after 10 mins . Heath defence of captain Dawn Gaston, Bex Smallman, Jo Fairbairn and Karen Bridgewater with goalkeeper Alison Field re-adjusted and quickly got back with the pace of the game. Midfielders Gemma Paull and Carly Vaughan worked tirelessly to feed the attack but Heath couldn’t quite finish although Trend did find the net only to be adjudged offside, and Mosen went close with a header following a corner.
At half time Ashworth replaced Onslow and the game came alive. From the restart Heath continued dominating in midfield, allowing Walters, Mosen and Ashworth to link together to show some impressive football which led Heath being brought level by Ashworth just 6 mins into the half . This gave Heath even more hunger to take control of the game, and after some excellent work from Trend on the left wing, and support from Mosen & Walters , Ashworth scored her 2nd in the 60th min , Jo Stevenson , on for Vaughan, unfortunately had an altercation with one of Langtons players which resulted in the Langton player being yellow carded , but this didn’t knock her confidence and she worked well down the wing to put in some good crosses. It was only a matter of time before Ashworth got her 3rd following good work by Trend with 15 mins to go and after the performance she gave she deserved every goal. Mel Conniff replaced Paull and Heath held their own until the final whistle with Trend beating the keeper only to see the ball hit the post.
Joint Managers Player of the Match were strikers Nat Trend and Jo Ashworth.
Next week Heath go to Langton Green for the 2nd leg, and hopefully can continue to play with the same competitive spirit
