Haywards Heaths Town 3rds 1 [Kelly Lambert ] Maresfield 0 - 5th Feb 2006
Heath 3rds knew this was their best chance of recording their 1st win of the season after so nearly winning away to Maresfield earlier in the season, being denied near the final whistle , but were surprisingly lacking in determination in the 1st half despite pre match input from Manager Brian Holmwood and Coach John Hewitt. Most of the play was in Maresfields half with good approach work being spoilt by lack of aggression near goal. Hayley Plummer showed plenty of skill whilst Natasha Sole, playing up front instead of her normal keeper role, gave promise of in attack but at halftime there had been no score with Heaths keeper Mel Rooney hardly touching the ball.
After the halftime talk Heath came out with more determination and following an early corner which went behind, scored when Maresfields goal kick went to the outstretched foot of Kelly Lambert and rolled into the goal with Maresfields keeper stranded !! with just 3 mins gone.
Both teams stepped up a gear but Heaths defence of Jo Stevenson [Heaths “Player of the Match”] Lindsey Richardson, Hayley Miller and Nicki Cook kept a tight rein on Maresfields forwards. Heath did appear to get the ball into the net again before it was cleared with 15 mins remaining but after consultation it was decided that the ball hadn’t completely crossed the line [no TV Cameras here!!]. With every player now giving 110% the final whistle , and the knowledge that victory was theirs, was greeted with a loud cheer from Heaths supporters and players alike.
